7 Keys to Avoiding a Crisis and Creating the Midlife You Want
It's a common assumption that every midlife has to involve a crisis. But is this true? Although many of us go through some challenging times in our middle years, it's not a given that we must experience a full-blown "crisis". Many people find ways to turn midlife into a rich period of positive change, setting new priorities and pursuing new dreams. Each person's path is unique, yet studies suggest there are things you can do to avoid crisis and create fulfilling changes.

We Recommend... Got the blahs? Tired of the same-old same-old? The Art of Possibility by Rosamund and Benjamin Zander can help lift you out of any rut you're stuck in. It's a charming, inspiring and highly practical book that invites us to look at the assumptions and attitudes that get in the way of our living creatively and passionately.
Benjamin Zander is the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Roz Zander is a family therapist. Together, they have combined their wisdom in an uplifting book filled with heart and humour. They show us that living in the frame of mind that "anything's possible" is truly an art-an art that any of us can master. - Published by Penguin Books.

Coach's Toolkit
Midlife is filled with reassessment. Things that used to matter a lot to us don't feel the same anymore. New priorities beckon-but how do we find the time to pursue them? A good first step is to become clearer about what we want or don't want now. To recognize, honestly, those things we've been saying "yes" to even though we know we want to stop. Or vice versa.
Here's a simple Exercise:
1. Draw a line down the middle of a sheet of paper 2. At the top of the left side, write NO. At the top of the right side, write YES. 3. In a quick brainstorm, write in the left column everything you can think of that you'd like to say NO to. These will probably include things you've been saying Yes to, but resenting. 4. In the right column, quickly jot down things you want to say YES to. These are probably things you've been wanting to do for some time, but have had so-called "good reasons" to put off. 5. Read over all your NO's. Choose one that you could act on today and do so. 6. Read over all your YES's. Same thing. Take action on at least one YES today.
Variation. Here's another way to do this exercise:
Instead of Yes and No at the top of the columns, write "Less Of" and "More Of". Then brainstorm all the things you want "less of" and all the things you want "more of" in your life. Once you see this written down, you'll likely recognize something you've been wanting to take action on for some time. Today's the day!

Something to Think About
"It isn't aging that frightens people. It's the fear of becoming uninspired and unwilling to try new things."
